As we get ready to celebrate our 10th business birthday, what’s the significance of the number 10?

Next month Red Clematis Coaching Services will celebrate its 10th business birthday. In October (ironically the 10th month of the year) 2024 when I established the business, I hoped it would be successful and stand the test of time.

10 years later and in spite of a pandemic, cost of living crisis and a number of other unavoidable world events, I am delighted to still be in business. And not only that but along the way I have met some incredible people and been able to share my coaching knowledge and expertise with individuals, teams and businesses across the UK.

10 is an interesting number

When reflecting on significant business birthdays or anniversaries, I got to thinking about the importance of the number ten, and did a bit of research into this number. I quickly discovered that whether it’s maths, numerology, symbolism, astrology, spirituality, psychology, religion or culture, the number ten is of major significance. But did you realise that it also plays a part in business too? The following are some examples.

  • There are always lots of 10 top tips/rules/principles for us to follow

  • Number 10 Downing Street – home of our Prime Minister who makes policy decisions for the country

  • The 70-20-10 Model for Learning and Development states that individuals obtain 70% of their knowledge from job-related experiences, 20% from interactions with others, and 10% from formal educational events

  • When it comes to feedback and reviews, there is usually a scale of 1 to 10. With ten being seen as good or even excellent

  • The 10 x 10 x 10 formula for business growth advocates for focusing your efforts on your top 10 customers, your top 10 prospects and your top 10 customers with potential

Completion

The symbolic meaning of the number ten signifies a cycle of life has ended and a new cycle has begun. In numerology, ten is a number for luck, synchronicity, flow, winning mentality, harmony and an inner feeling of happiness. In psychology, it is seen as a rational, ordered number which offers a sense of completion or a full-circle effect.

And when it comes to maths, the number ten has some pretty impressive credentials. It’s a ‘composite’ number - the sum of the first four consecutive whole numbers (1,2,3 and 4) as well as the first three prime numbers (2, 3, and 5). It’s also considered to be a ’perfect’ number because it equals the sums of its divisors, 1, 2 and 5.

Growth and achievement

Plus, who can forget that there were ten commandments and that we have ten fingers and ten toes. Whilst the astrological significance underscores the value of hard work, perseverance and overcoming obstacles for personal growth, fulfilment, achievement and success. But I think that I would like to concentrate on what the number ten means spiritually, as I believe that this is more closely aligned to where I am.

  • New beginnings

  • Growth and self-discovery

  • Knowledge and belief

  • Individuality and wholeness

  • Perfection or completeness

So a big thank you to my clients, prospective clients, suppliers, business contacts, friends and family for your support and encouragement over the past decade. It’s been an interesting and rewarding time and I sincerely hope that there are plenty more years for me ahead where I can help and support individuals, managers/leaders and business owners on their journey, whilst continuing to make happy business memories.
